vtAlpha already supported OpenVMS clustering and with version 2.6 it adds complete virtualized support for TruCluster. It is in fact the only Alpha virtualization product that offers this high level of TruCluster support.
Offering fully virtualized TruCluster support allows Tru64 installations (and OpenVMS) to easily move to a more current computer platform and use all its standard available peripherals to form a cluster. This without being dependent of slightly more modern versions of the original Alpha Emulex adapters, who prove to be really expensive and hard to get.
vtAlpha 2.6 supports clustering via FibreChannel, SCSI and logical disks. Implementation examples:
- Replacing a hardware Alpha in a running multi-node FibreChannel based cluster. Mixed Cluster of physical and virtual Alphas
- Replacing a Alpha cluster by a virtual equivalent running on HP Proliants.
In addition to this, vtAlpha includes support for virtual network switches allowing to share physical host network links by multiple virtual Alpha’s and/or virtual network adapters. This feature proves its value when using Low Profile or Blade Proliant servers with only a limited number of Ethernet links or PCI slots. Having only two physical links still allows you to run multiple virtual Alphas with many virtual network links without a problem.
vtAlpha v2.6 also includes extra security measures bringing the reliability of the virtual Alpha to the highest levels. It includes the ability to setup Disaster Resilient virtual Alpha installations, warranting the 100% availability of the virtual Alpha systems in your environment.
